Holiday Party Etiquette: A Top 5 List

Trivia Question:
When going to your first holiday party this year, what is the #1 thing every gal should never leave the house with BUT the majority of us forget about completely?

Answer:
A hostess gift!

Here are my TOP 5 do’s & don’ts for holiday hostess gift-giving:

1. It does not have to be elaborate!  Wine, specialty food items or small items for the house all make fabulous options. Here are a few of my current outside-the-box hostess gift options this season:

Pangea Bar Soap
A gift that gives back - Pangea supports Women for Women International.   It smells amazing and is packaged so beautifully that you should really skip the wrapping paper!
Assorted scents / $8 each / Purchase here

Global Goods Partners
Supports women-led business efforts in 24 different countries to work toward ending poverty and promoting social justice.  These African Beaded Bangles are handmade by Maasai women.  The website features beautiful handmade pieces from all over the world!

Stencil Chocolate Bar Set
8 mini tablets of different chocolates featuring imprint labels by Boston-based artist Stencil1.  Yummy, hip, and comes pre-packaged in a gift box and bow!

Honeycomb Jar
The Savannah Bee Company makes the most delicious honey and this little jar packs a punch both in looks and taste!
$15 big jar + $6 small jar / Purchase here

2.  If you bring flowers, please take the next considerate step and offer to put them in a vase (better yet, bring them in a small vase!)  Your host has a whole host of other things going on!  And yes.  I did it.  I just said "host" twice in the same sentence.  You didn't think it could be done, did ya?! :-)

3.  Stay clear of the cardinal sins of host gift-giving:
- Never open what you brought
- Never expect your hostess to open your gift  that same evening.  It very well could be a bottle of wine that does not fit with the planned menu.
- Never take back what you brought over.  Have any of you ever seen someone walk out the door with the very same bottle of Grey Goose that they gifted just 3 hours ago?  Not okay!!
4. For the holiday season, I like to take a few extra minutes and wrap the gift to make it a little extra special.  Chatelaine shows how to make this simple but gorgeous bow.

5. If you’re coming to my party, please consider vodka and tequila as acceptable hostess gifts :-)

So tell me – What are your thoughts about giving host/hostess gifts?

XO - Marion
